Do deleted files genuinely disappear from your computer?

July 22nd, 2009

Ever wonder where files go after we delete them? The answer is simple. They go nowhere. Deleted files are not removed from your computer’s hard drive. Rather the space they require is relabeled as available to be over written. As long as you do not overwrite the file the underlying data is intact and can be undeleted.
I have looked all over my computer keyboard and have yet to find the undelete key. While many programs have an undo feature, there doesn’t seem to be a tool to undelete files. I can tell you now that I need an undelete key. It seems my fingers are always tripping over themselves resulting in copy being cut when I don’t want to and entire files being accidentally deleted.

Sensible reasons to use CD based unerase files programs

Of course I am just kidding around but still the need to undelete files is real and I often have to do this. To undelete files I use powerful software for file recovery. The program I prefer is fairly inexpensive (under $40.00) and allows me to simply burn a CD/DVD that holds the program. This is especially important, as when you go to unerase files you need to be sure not to overwrite the data. Another reason you must use a disk loading file recovery program is that in cases where your computer will not start up you most data recovery software requires that you dismantle your computer and connect it to a technician computer. A technician computer is one that serves to hold the software to undelete files but must be taken apart so as to connect via cable to the drive on which files are missing. This process can take days and often the technician computer is not compatible with the drive. Forget all that and find a program that is burned onto a repair disk. That disk then loads onto your computer by way of the CD/DVD drive. These programs allow you to unerase files within minutes and save then to a simple USB flash drive.

In fact you can even use such a program to undelete files lost on USB Flash Drives, Memory cards and any other kind of digital storage media. When looking for this software bear in mind that this is not an expensive product avoid any software to undelete files that requires a separate computer. Most file recovery software requires this and most companies that sell this software carefully hide this in their promotion. Unless software to undelete files specifically states there is no computer disassembly required, assume it is not the program you want. The software you need will not only recover deleted files but also copy and save an entire hard drive if that is required. It should be able to load via disk and even start a computer with a crashed drive.
There is no magic button to undelete files on your computer or mine. But there are a few powerful programs that will work on any computer when you need to unerase files.
